Locomotive Lights:
Objective Testing for Comparison for Variable Configurations

Author:  Dr. Bernard S. Abrams

Date of Publication:  1995 (?)

Abstract:

The enclosed second part of our study relates to various locations, configurations and weighage of locomotive lights and their luminance measurements obtained by objective techniques.

In the United States, most locomotive lights have been placed at 14 feet 10 inches in a singular form. These lights have not been designed for use as both lighting and warning.

The newer dual ditch lights configuration at 57 inches separation and 54 inches high have significant advantages both in light projection and warning to motorists.

It is suggested they be incorporated on all locomotive engines.
